Make Every Checkout Faster With Top-Scoring Performance
Up to 40% Faster Than Competitive Models at Self-Checkout
In an independent controlled ergonomics study, the SP72-V scanned items up to 40% faster than the competitive models tested at self-checkout. Rapid capture helps cashiers and customers keep products moving instead of pausing to hunt for the barcode sweet spot.
Up to 44% Larger Scan Area Makes Scanning Easier Than Ever
The same study measured an SP72-V scanning sweet spot up to 44% larger than the competing models tested. A larger scan area requires less exact barcode positioning, creating a more natural swipe-and-go motion for self-checkout users and leaving cashiers more attention for customers.
In optimized mode, the SP72 handles a 13 mil UPC moving as fast as 120 inches per second. Its 54 by 35.5 degree nominal field of view, 15% minimum print contrast, plus or minus 70 degree skew tolerance, and broad pitch and roll tolerance make barcodes easier to acquire from real-world presentation angles.
A Scanning Experience up to 2X More Intuitive Than the Rest
Zebra PRZM Intelligent Imaging works with the 1920 x 1200 sensor to improve decode performance on damaged, crinkled, faded, and otherwise challenging labels. In the controlled study, the SP72-V was up to twice as effective as the tested competitors across various barcode types and sizes.
Leads the Competition in 2D and Mobile Barcode Performance
The SP72 is built for expanding 2D and mobile-barcode use at checkout. Independent testing measured the SP72-V up to 54% faster on common DataMatrix barcodes and the SP72-H up to 50% faster on mobile-phone barcodes than the competitive models tested.
The imager reads Code 39 and Code 128 down to 3 mil, and DataMatrix and QR down to 5 mil. Typical 13 mil UPC range extends from contact to 8.6 inches on SP72-V and from contact to 7.2 inches on SP72-H, with actual distance dependent on symbol size, quality, and conditions.
Create the Perfect Checkout Solution With Unmatched Versatility
The compact SP72-V can stand on a counter or mount to a wall or table. Its flat face fits into self-checkout enclosures and kiosks, while elevated internal electronics provide added protection from liquid that reaches the counter.
The SP72-H installs flush in the counter for a zero-footprint scanning surface and is designed as a drop-in replacement for popular legacy installations. Buyers can select Sapphire or Diamond-Like Coating glass to balance durability requirements and budget.
SP7201 configurations focus on high-performance single-plane scanning and offer host plus optional EAS connectivity. Premium SP7208 models add ports for features such as an auxiliary handheld scanner; the optional color camera is limited to selected SP7208-V configurations.
A Higher ROI for Self-Checkout—Less Shrink
Enable New Business Applications With Vision Solutions
Selected SP7208-V models support an optional 2.3 MP color camera with a 129 by 75.9 degree field of view and USB 3 Type-C interface. Applications can use image transfer or live video to identify an item-and-barcode mismatch, preserve detail for analysis, or discourage checkout fraud; the camera is not available on SP7201 or SP72-H models.
Vision applications can identify an item that passes through the field of view without a successful barcode decode. That event can trigger a mitigation workflow for an accidental missed scan or an intentional attempt to bypass scanning, helping retailers address shrink at self-checkout.
Upward-Facing “Good Decode” LEDs Work With Video-Based Loss Prevention Systems
Visible good-decode LEDs help associates and loss-prevention systems confirm that an item was scanned. The SP72-V provides front and top indicators; the SP72-H provides a front indicator and can support a second external speaker on applicable premium configurations.
Reduce Shrink With Optional EAS Support With Interlock
Configurations with optional Checkpoint or Sensormatic EAS support can deactivate a compatible tag when the product barcode is decoded. Requiring a successful scan before deactivation can speed legitimate checkout while reducing sweethearting and other forms of loss; the feature depends on the selected configuration and EAS system.
Elevate the Checkout Experience
Eye-Friendly Intelligent Illumination
Deep-red recessed illumination activates only when an item enters the scan zone, minimizing constant glare for cashiers and shoppers. SP72-V users in the controlled study rated the experience up to 72% more comfortable than the comparable models tested, and brightness can be reduced or turned off when the application permits.
Go Beyond the Beep With Custom Feedback Tones
The adjustable speaker can use a traditional beep, Zebra's library of digital and melodic sounds, or a custom audio file. SP72-H supports both internal and external speaker choices on applicable configurations, allowing clear feedback even when the scanner is installed inside a counter or enclosure.
Increase Flexibility With Handheld Scanning
Premium SP7208 models provide an auxiliary port for a compatible handheld scanner, giving users a practical way to capture heavy or oversized items that remain in the cart. An auxiliary scanner requires an external power supply, so this workflow should be included in installation planning.
Minimize Exceptions With Selectable Label Identifiers
Zebra's selectable label identifiers can convert one decoded barcode type into another output type, such as presenting QR data to the host as Code 128. This can let newer symbols work with an existing application and reduce manual entry without changing every downstream system at once.
Supported North American configurations can parse driver's-license data for age verification and customer workflows. This is a regional, configuration-dependent application rather than a universal SP72 capability, so the required model and host integration should be confirmed before purchase.
Low Cost of Ownership
Reliability on a Day-to-Day Basis
IP52 sealing helps protect the scanner from dust and liquid spills, and the rated operating range extends from 32 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Ambient-light immunity up to 8,000 foot-candles supports bright indoor checkout areas, while approved cleaning guidance is available in Zebra's product reference guide.
Easy Installation and a Fast Setup
USB certification, auto-host detect cables, more than 90 international keyboards, and USB, RS232, Keyboard Wedge, or TGCS (IBM) 46XX interfaces simplify integration with common POS systems. Core scanning configurations can be host-powered over standard USB, avoiding an added power supply; external power is required when using the auxiliary scanner and color camera together.
Make Data-Driven Decisions Informed by Your Scanners
Zebra IoT Connector routes real-time scanner data to a chosen IoT endpoint for analysis and action. Zebra's Scanner SDK provides drivers, documentation, test utilities, and sample source code so developers can build scanner controls into line-of-business applications.
Zebra DNA — Set Up. Secure. Manage. Optimize.
123Scan programs parameters, updates firmware, displays decoded data and scanning statistics, and produces reports, while its wizard can stage as many as 10 scanners locally. Advanced Data Formatting and other parsing tools transform captured data to match host workflows, reducing the need for application changes.
Scanner Management Service and Windows Management Instrumentation provide remote configuration and asset queries, while Remote Diagnostics supplies operational insight for troubleshooting. These tools help support teams standardize settings and investigate problems without visiting every lane.
Markets and Applications
The SP72 is intended for staffed POS and self-checkout lanes in grocery, supermarkets and hypermarkets, pharmacies, convenience stores, and specialty retail. It handles paper and mobile barcodes, while EAS and vision-based loss prevention remain optional capabilities that require the appropriate configuration and surrounding solution.
